Natural gas is a type of fossil fuel and naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas. It chiefly consists of methane, though may include varying amount of other higher alkanes along with some traces of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide or helium. Natural gas when liquefied produces Liquid Natural Gas (LNG).
On the other hand, Propane consists of three carbon atoms and it is a gas at standard temperature and pressure. Propane gas is basically a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining. Unlike natural gas, propane is extensively used as fuel. Propane can be compressed to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) or Liquid Petrol Gas at low pressure. However, it is to be noted that Propane is LPG but not all LPG is Propane.
We all are familiar with the uses and implementations of Natural Gas. It is well known that only few natural gas operated vehicles in United States of America use Energy Assessment Services. However, it is not so in the case of propane operated vehicles in US. Propane gas is broadly used as fuel for vehicles in most countries.

- On terms of weight with respect to air, propane gas is heavier while natural gas is lighter. Therefore when there occurs a leak, propane gas would accumulate at the lowest points like basement, sewer drains, etc. However, Canada Natural Gas would rise high. Hence natural gas is comparatively safer.
- Propane gas is stocked up in a tank while natural gas is not. Propane in liquefied form is stored in tanks or vessels. This enables propane to be available everywhere even when there exists no natural gas network. But, natural gas is not stored in tanks; hence it is only available where there exists a natural gas network.
- Propane contains twice the energy of natural gas; hence BTU of propane is comparatively higher than natural gas per cubic foot. In other terms, Propane is more energy efficient than natural gas.
- Natural gas is cost effective than any other fuel. Propane is expensive compared to natural gas. So in terms of expense, natural gas is a better alternative.
- Natural gas is a clean burning hydrocarbon gas, so it produces much lesser pollution in the environment. Again, Propane is considered as a “green fuel” and is known to be harmless and non-toxic to the environment. Thus, both Propane and Natural Gas are environmentally safe.
Depending upon these differences one should choose between Propane and Natural Gas. Both of them have advantages and disadvantages, but depending upon your requirements and facilities needed, you should opt for either of them.
